Pest control

Mosquito control for northern Indiana yards

Sitting out on the patio shouldn't cost you a dozen bites. We treat the shaded, damp corners where mosquitoes hide during the day, and we come back through the season so they don't take the yard over again.

What it is

A seasonal treatment of the places mosquitoes rest

We treat the shaded leaves, ground cover, and damp corners where adult mosquitoes hide during the day. Most yards around here run May through first frost.

Mosquitoes aren't spread evenly across a yard. In the heat of the day they sit still in cool, humid, shady spots. The underside of shrub foliage. Tall grass along a fence. Ivy and ground cover. The space under a deck. The north side of the garage. Come evening they head for wherever you're sitting.

Our treatment goes on those resting spots. The technician walks the property and hits the low leaves and shaded surfaces where mosquitoes actually land. Fogging the open air looks impressive and does almost nothing by morning, so we skip it.

Adults are only half the problem. The mosquitoes bothering most yards here breed in tiny amounts of standing water, sometimes just a saucer under a flower pot, and can go from egg to biting adult in about a week of warm weather. If we spot a source on your property, we'll flag it and tell you which ones to dump.

Timing

How the season runs around the lakes

Kosciusko County has more than a hundred lakes. The yards we treat sit next to water, low ground, woods, and drainage ditches that hold water for days after a storm. All of that is mosquito habitat within easy flight range of your back porch.

Things pick up in May, once the daytime temperatures settle into the fifties and sixties. June through August is when it's worst. A wet stretch in July can push the population back up inside of a week. Numbers taper through September, and once we get a hard frost, usually October, the season is done.

A treatment wears off in roughly three weeks, and mosquitoes keep flying in from next door. That's why this is a repeating service instead of a one-time visit. Starting in April or May beats calling us in July, when you're chasing a population that's already up.

Indiana mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus. The Indiana Department of Health tracks it every summer, and it's a good reason to take a heavy year seriously instead of just living with it.

Before we arrive

A few things that actually help

  • Dump anything holding water: buckets, wheelbarrows, planter saucers, kiddie pools, tarps, old tires.
  • Refresh birdbaths and outdoor pet bowls once a week so nothing has time to hatch out.
  • Clear the gutters. Check that downspouts actually drain somewhere instead of puddling next to the house.
  • Cut overgrown ground cover back and trim shrubs off the siding so air and light reach the soil.
  • Unlock gates, bring toys and pet bowls in, and keep the dog inside while we're on the property.

The GreenWorks difference

We're small, local, and owner-operated. Nobody prices a lakefront lot off the same template as an open subdivision yard, because those two properties don't need the same schedule and we've been on enough of both to know it.

Every application is made by a trained technician following the product label, re-entry times and all. If something isn't working between visits, call (574) 549-3650 and we'll come back out and look.

Questions

Mosquito Yard Treatment questions

How long does one treatment last?

About three weeks. Sun, rain, and new leaf growth wear it down, and fresh mosquitoes wander in from the neighbors. That is why we run this on a schedule instead of selling it as a one-and-done.

When does mosquito season start up here?

Usually May, once the nights stop dropping into the thirties. June through August is the worst of it, and a wet July can put numbers right back up within days. Treatment runs until the first hard frost, often October.

Will you kill every mosquito in the yard?

No, and if a company tells you otherwise, hang up. What we can do is knock the pressure down enough that you can eat outside without waving your hands. Lakefront and wooded lots need the tightest schedule to stay there.

What should I do before you come out?

Pick up toys and pet bowls, move tarps and grill covers, unlock the gate, and keep pets in while we work. If you dump every saucer, bucket, and wheelbarrow the day before, that helps more than anything else.

Does a good lawn program keep mosquitoes down?

A little. Turf that's cut and healthy has fewer damp shady spots for them to rest in, so it helps at the edges. But fertilizer and weed control don't solve a mosquito problem. Treating the resting habitat does.

Can I add this to my lawn account?

Yes. Mosquito visits keep their own schedule, but they land on the same account and the same bill as your fertilization and weed control. Give us a call and we'll line the two up.
