Lawn care and pest control in South Whitley

South Whitley and Columbia City share a county, a soil survey area and a short drive up the road, and they sit on almost nothing in common under the grass. A lawn company that treats both towns the same way is guessing on one of them.

Columbia City is heavy clay till that stops passing water eight inches down. South Whitley is outwash. Nearly forty percent of the town, a single map unit, is Kalamazoo sandy loam, which the USDA rates as well drained. Add Boyer sandy loam on top of that, in two more map units, and more than half of South Whitley sits on ground the Eel River laid down as sand and gravel. The fourth largest mapped soil unit inside the town limits is not a soil at all, it is pits and gravel. Nobody mines gravel out of clay.

That changes the lawn's whole problem. Sand cannot hold water and it cannot hold the nutrients dissolved in that water. Boyer's surface passes water more than ten times faster than the topsoil in Columbia City does, and its E horizon holds about nine hundredths of an inch of water per inch of soil, which is the same number the sandiest ground in Warsaw runs. If you have watered a Warsaw lawn, you already know what a South Whitley lawn wants. A skipped week in July is a collapse, not a stress event, and one heavy spring feeding washes through the profile before the grass has used much of it.

Not the whole town, though. On the higher ground away from the river, around a tenth of South Whitley is Morley loam, which behaves like the Columbia City till: clay eight inches down, water that will not move, and compaction that answers to core aeration rather than another round of fertilizer. And down along the river the flood plain is real. About eight percent of the town is on Shoals, Stonelick and Sloan alluvium that the survey classes as flooded, and a bit more is open water.

So South Whitley is a mixed town with a legible split. Sand terrace across most of it, a strip of clay up on the higher ground, and river-bottom alluvium along the water. The program on any one lot depends on which of those three you are standing on.

South Whitley is a river town. It was platted in 1837 on the north bank of the Eel, a year before Whitley County was even organized, and the ground under the grass is the river's work. The gravel pits mapped inside the town limits are what is left when the outwash is quarried, and the alluvium along the water is what the river drops when it slows down.

That river is also the reason we pay close attention to what goes on the lawn here. South Whitley sits on the Upper and Middle Eel River, which IDEM defines as a twenty-six-mile reach running from Columbia City down to North Manchester. The watershed management plan for that reach was approved by IDEM and the US EPA in January 2024, and sampling done for that plan by Manchester University found phosphorus above the target in nearly every sample and nitrate above the target in almost every one. That is the reach South Whitley sits on, and the phosphorus that leaves a lawn here is on its way to it.

Indiana restricts phosphorus on established lawns, and we run phosphorus-free unless a soil test says the ground is actually short. We keep granular product off the driveway, the sidewalk and the street, because what lands on a hard surface is one storm away from a storm drain, and around here that water ends up in the Eel. Any pellets that scatter off the turf get swept back before we leave.

The flood-plain half of the story is a different job. A lawn on Shoals or Sloan that took two feet of water in a wet April does not need another round of fertilizer. It needs the silt worked out, the compaction opened up and, sometimes, the thinnest patches reseeded once the ground has dried enough to hold the roots.
