Lawn care and pest control in Pierceton

What Pierceton ground actually is
Most of Pierceton sits on moraine till. The dominant soils inside town are Wawasee and Riddles fine sandy loams, both well drained on the higher ground. The third most common map unit is Crosier loam, which is somewhat poorly drained, and it turns up in the low spots. So the town has good ground on the rises and slow, wet-footed ground in the corners where the loam sits low. It is heavier ground overall than Warsaw's, and after a dry stretch it sets up firm.
That difference matters more than it sounds. Warsaw is ten minutes west and sits on loamy sand that drains almost too fast, holding only about a tenth of an inch of water per inch of soil. Two towns, opposite prescriptions. Warsaw needs more frequent, lighter feeding and closer attention to water. Pierceton needs the ground opened up.
What that means for the work: a lot of what looks like a fertilizer problem on a Pierceton lawn is a compaction problem wearing a fertilizer mask. Ground that sets up firm shuts water and nutrients out at the surface, and no amount of nitrogen fixes that from the top. Core aeration is the cheapest thing most lawns in town can get.
A wet low corner is the same story from the other end. That patch does not need more water and it does not need more nitrogen. It needs air. Cores let the soil breathe and let excess water find its way down instead of pooling at the roots.
Seeding into open cores in the fall is how thin ground fills back in on this side of the county. Regionally, June averages around 4.88 inches of rain and September drops to about 2.91, roughly forty percent less, and that drop lands right when cool-season turf is coming out of summer stress and when fall seed goes down. Working with that rhythm instead of against it is most of the job.

Half this town was built before 1939
Pierceton was platted in 1853 and incorporated in 1866, and it shows. The median home in town was built in 1944. Nearly half of the housing stock, 47.7 percent, was built in 1939 or earlier. For a town of 928 people, that is a lot of old houses standing on old foundations.
Old foundations are the pest story here, and it is a different story than a new build tells. Stone and block that has been in the ground for eighty or a hundred years has settled. Sills have moved. There are gaps where masonry meets siding, gaps around original window frames, gaps at every place a pipe or a wire was ever pulled through the wall. Ants, spiders, ground beetles and boxelder bugs are not coming through the middle of the lawn. They are crossing at the foundation seam, and an older house gives them more ways in than a new build does.
That is what perimeter pest control is actually for. A treated band outside the foundation cuts the traffic across those seams, and cuts it hard. It does not turn a 1930s crawlspace into a sealed vault, and we will not tell you it does. Some of the work stays with the homeowner: caulk around hose bibs and dryer vents, fix torn screens, drop in a fresh garage door sweep when the old one has curled. That closes the doors. The perimeter treatment handles the ones that stay open, using a product at label rate that a homeowner cannot legally buy off the shelf.
The other thing worth saying: 76.7 percent of Pierceton houses are owner-occupied. These are people who have lived with the same foundation for years and know exactly which corner the ants come in every May. When we walk a property, that history is usually the first thing we hear, and it saves both of us a lot of guessing about where to treat.

Neither. GreenWorks is a lawn-health and exterior pest control company. We feed the soil, control weeds and insects, treat around the outside of the house for pests, and aerate and seed to keep the turf thick.
